What is the Red Palm Weevil?

The Red Weevil is an insect, a species of beetle, from Africa that infects some plants mostly palms by making their nests in them and ends up killing them. It is a great threat to all palm trees in Southern Europe.

When can palm trees be pruned in Ibiza?

Ibiza palm trees can ONLY be pruned in the months of December, January and February, because this winter time is where temperatures tend to be lower and weevil activity is less. The Red Palm Weevil invades new palm trees due to open wounds on their trunk or leaves, which is why it is not convenient to prune palm trees in summer.

What to do if I have a palm with Red Weevil?

According to European Comunity guidelines, palm trees that have Red Palm Weevil nests must be cut and eliminated following community regulations.

What types of treatments are there to eliminate the Red Weevil?

There are several types of treatments to eliminate Red Weevils, chemical treatments using special chemical products for their elimination and biological treatments using special bacteria that attack the Red Weevil. But the most effective method, although it is the least pleasant for the owner of the palm tree, is to cut it down (with a complete removing of the remains, leaves and trunk) and replacing it with a healthy one.
